MATTHEW HASSELL (1983)

Hassell’s current work is an amassing or collision of gestures in a common space, creating an omni-representational visual static. Hassell hopes to encourage imaginative and introspective investigation from the viewer in order to connect the eye and the imagination more freely. They are designed to differ subtly per each unique viewing, as well as in relation to the local light of their hanging situation.

Working out of Brooklyn, NY, Matthew Hassell is an avid painter and independent art critic. He earned a BFA from University of Connecticut before completing his MFA at Pratt Institute. His  evenings are spent viewing art while his days are busy painting and writing reviews of work he has seen. Matthew’s writing has appeared in NY Arts Magazine, NYC ArtParasites, Idiom, and is self-published in his own personal blog titled Fragments and Reconstructions. Having partaken in various group shows since moving to New York five years ago, his work earned him a selection in NY Art Magazine’s 30 Artists to Watch in 2012.

Ted Gahl

TED GAHL (1983)

Ted Gahl’s paintings of varying scale are energetic works made with intuitive brush strokes and deeply personal imagery. Re- occurring motifs – such as doorways, abstracted figures and storyboard narratives morph alongside bold technique and shifting illusions of space. Gahl’s paintings often read as elements of subconscious activities – reveries, dreams, memories and warped histories, while being firmly grounded in the act of painting itself. Paint on canvas will sometimes be joined by constructed dimensions, which playfully shift the work between surface and object.

Ted Gahl was born in 1983 in New Haven, CT. Solo projects include Night Painter at DODGEgallery, Ted Gahl curated by 62nd Dimension at Green Gallery West, Milwaukee, WI and Ted Gahl at Halsey McKay Gallery, East Hampton, NY. His work has been reviewed in various publications including White Hot Magazine, Beautiful/Decay, and Time Out New York. Gahl lives and works in Litchfield, CT. This April Gahl will be showing at Halsey McKay Gallery in East Hampton in a solo show titled “Gin Blossoms”.

Rachel Rossin

RACHEL ROSSIN (1987)

Rachel Rossin’s work thematically grapples with metaphysical and spiritual themes. Her most recent solo show at the Arts-District CoRK presented by MOCA in Jacksonville, Florida: “Holy See” invited visitors to experience walking on 3,000 hollow eggs while traversing through a hologram comprised of translucent curtains. Creating this new series for Spring/Break out of her most recent show, Rossin includes her plaster and mixed-media sculptures titled “Waiting.” The  plaster hands are dissected and shattered to reveal brightly colored patterns adorned with symbolism yielding to inform the viewer’s inferences about time, owning power and heralding transcendence.

Rachel Rossin is a New York based artist, working in Brooklyn. She exhibited at last year’s Spring/Break, The Brucennial, The Bowery Basement Annex and Charles Bank Gallery.

Chuck Webster

 

CHUCK WEBSTER (1970)

Chuck Webster is known for his playful quasi-abstract paintings and drawings. Lyrical voluminous forms loosely refer to animals, plants, architecture, and human bodies. Webster’s deadpan compositions feature a centered graphic floating nonchalantly against a vibrant, usually monochrome, background. His saturated colors and playful biomorphic forms evoke the spuriously naïve abstractions of Paul Klee and late Matisse, as well as outsider artist Forrest Bess. Although these paintings may seem capricious, they are carefully created and reworked over the course of six to eight months. In more recent work, however, Webster has begun to apply the speed and spontaneity of his drawings to the painting process.

Webster’s work has been exhibited in group shows at PS1 Contemporary Art Center, the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, the San Diego Museum of Art, MOCA Detroit, and the Berkshire Museum. His work is in the permanent collections of the Whitney Museum of American Art and the MFA Houston.

Russell Tyler

 

RUSSELL TYLER (1981)

Tyler’s paintings are inspired by images from outdated sources such as early video game graphics, computer screens and old television.  He places the work in the crude digital landscapes of 8-bit graphics.  There is a shallow depth to the paintings as well as a simple color language.  Tyler sees his interaction with the picture plane as not unlike my relationship with the screen.  There is a sense of the hypothetical to the work; the paintings could be a setting for an action that will never take place.  The paintings are in part blurred memories of the technologies he grew up with.  These imaging systems inform both how he compose the painting as well as how the work is read by the viewer.

Jane Moseley

Jane Moseley was born and raised in Los Angeles, California. Moseley graduated from Bard College in 2009 with a BA in Studio Arts. She is an artist with The Still House group, and recently left Manhattan to work in Hudson New York.  

Talia Shulze

Talia Shulze  was born in 1984 in Minneapolis, M.N. Shulze earned her Bachelor of Fine Art in 2006 from Virginia Commonwealth University. She is currently based in Brooklyn, New York.

Charlotte Hallberg

Charlotte Hallberg received her MFA in Painting/Printmaking from Yale University in 2010, and her BFA from Rhode Island School of Design in 2007. She was an Annenberg Fellow in Visual Arts from 2010-2012. Her work has been exhibited most recenly at Grizzly Grizzly gallery in Philadelphia,PA, and at Bridge Gallery, NY, NY.  She lives and works in Brooklyn, NY.

Kris Scheifele

Kris Scheifele is an artist based in New York City. She received an MFA in painting from Pratt Institute and a BFA in painting and a BA in English from Cornell University. She also attended Skowhegan and was a Joan Mitchell Foundation MFA Grant recipient. Her artwork has been exhibited at CUE Art Foundation, PS122 Gallery, 92Y Tribeca, and Janet Kurnatowski.

Matt Mignanelli

 

MATT MIGNANELLI (1983)

Mignanelli’s painting explores relationships between structure and nature, which are relayed through the use of light and architectural elements in a limited palette to create enigmatic environments. Drawing inspiration from energy, pattern, and light he strives for purity in painting. In his monochromes, Mignanelli reexamines the evolving interactions amongst light and surface. Through the use of reflective gloss and absorbing matte finishes he creates a constantly evolving viewing experience. The resulting subtleties highlight the materiality of the paintings. Mignanelli fully immerses the viewer within his environments while altering the perception of dimensional space.

Aesthetic and process define his practice. Painted entirely free-hand, he constantly challenges personal boundaries striving for perfection and purity in his execution.

Mignanelli’s paintings have been exhibited extensively throughout the United States and internationally with solo exhibitions at Marianne Friis, Copenhagen (forthcoming), Artpark, Warsaw, Medicine Agency, San Francisco, and Recoat Gallery, Glasgow. He has exhibited at Art Copenhagen with Marianne Friis Gallery (2012), Goss-Michael Foundation in Dallas (2012), Quint Contemporary, San Diego (2012), SCOPE Art Show in New York City with Spinello Projects (2011), Marianne Boesky Gallery in New York City (2011), and Mark Wolfe Contemporary San Francisco, CA (2011). Mignanelli has lectured at Parsons The New School for Design and the Art Director’s Club of Tulsa. In 2011 he was awarded an Artist’s Grant and attended the Vermont Studio Center as an artist-in-residence.

Maia Ruth Lee

Maia Ruth Lee is a Seoul-born, Nepal-raised, and New York-based artist. Lee recently exhibited at Spring/Break Art Show this past March. She works with found objects, himalayan folklore, and rituals.

Oliver Jones

Oliver Jones was born in Fredericksburg, VA.  He received his BA from the College of William & Mary where he studied Sculpture, History & Religion.  He apprenticed for four years at Bronze Craft Foundry in Waynesboro, Va.In 2003, He graduated with a MFA from the Pennsylvania Academy for the Fine Arts where he ran the Visiting Artist Program and co-founded a student-run journal for theory and criticism.  In recent years, he has contributed to the Bruce High Quality Foundation's University and has been awarded residencies at the Vermont Studio Center in Johnson, VT and Elsewhere Collaborative in Greensboro, NC.

Ryan Foerster

Ryan Foerster was born in Newmarket Canada, 1983. He lives in Brighton Beach, Brooklyn. Foerster has exhibited with Martos Gallery, New York, West Street Gallery, New York, and Ribordy Contemporary, Geneva. He was included in The 2011 Bridgehampton Biennial, curated by Bob Nickas, as well as most recently exhibiting in The Quality of Presence at the Chelsea Hotel.

Amy Feldman

Amy Feldman received a BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design and a MFA from Rutgers University. She has recently been included in exhibitions at Sue Scott Gallery, New York; Bronx River Art Center, Bronx, New York; and Participant Inc., New York. Feldman has been a Visiting Artist at Virginia Commonwealth University, Lehman College, and Wave Hill, and has received a New Jersey State Council on the Arts Grant. She also was awarded fellowships from VCU Arts at Plant Zero, The MacDowell Colony, Yaddo, and the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture. Amy Feldman is currently an artist-in-residence at The Henry Street Settlement/Abrons Art Center. She recently received a fellowship from the Marie Walsh Sharpe Foundation and is preparing for a solo exhibition at Blackston Gallery, New York, and upcoming group exhibitions in New York and Los Angeles.

Michael Dotson

Michael Dotson was born in Cleveland, OH, where he grew up hanging around his mom while she attended the Cleveland Institute of Art as she studied Industrial Design. After moving to Buffalo, NY and Providence, RI respectively Michael moved back to Cleveland to pursue a BFA in painting.  He later received his MFA from American University in Washington, DC before moving to Brooklyn, NY where he currently lives and works.

Palma Blank

Palma Blank was born in Norwalk, CT, 1979. She lives and works in Brooklyn, NY. She received a MFA from Yale University, New Haven, CT and a BFA from Rhode Island School of Design, Providence, RI. Her work has been included in numerous exhibitions throughout New York. Fully Charged is the artist's first solo exhibition with Horton Gallery and her first major New York solo exhibition.  

Jon Blank

Jon Blank is a painter residing in Greenpoint, Brooklyn since 2007. He received his BFA from RISD in 2006 as an industrial design major and is currently pursuing his MFA in Painting at Rutgers.

Trudy Benson

Trudy Benson was born in Richmond, VA, 1985. She lives and works in Brooklyn, NY. Benson received her BFA from Virginia Commonwealth University in 2009 and her MFA from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn in 2010.  She is represented by  Mike Weiss Gallery in New York. Virtual worlds can be found in Benson’s intuitively constructed compositions and the tension between forms and voids speak to her fascination with the cosmos. Benson’s fervor for the physical act of painting is readily evident in her mark-making; her viscous gestures evoke the onomatopoeic language of comic books taking shape as bold splunks!, shoops!, and splats! that emerge sculpturally from the surface of the canvas.

Gordon Douglass Ball

Gordon Douglas (b. 1979, Montréal, Québec) began entering into skateboard comps in the mid 80’s, but his professional skateboarding career never took off. He spent he spent the mid 90’s roadying for his close friends GRADE, but quit life on the road to attend art school. In 1999 he enrolled into Ontario College of Art & Design in Toronto with a scholarship from Oakville Galleries. Today, Gordon Douglas has a dozen group shows under his belt and 3 solo exhibitions. Early in 2012, Gordon Douglas released a self-published photography book and was archived by the AGO (Toronto, Canada), Musée D'Art Contemporain de Montréal (Montréal, Canada), and the MoMA (New York City, USA).
